Become a Student

IHELP works to empower immigrant adults and youth in the St. Louis area to have increased confidence and independence. Students in our program receive individualized tutoring based on their own needs and goals. We provide the opportunity to study English and U.S. Citizenship as requested by our students.

Due to high demand, we are currently limited to intaking 5 new student referrals per month. Call as early in the month as possible to put an individual on the list. If we are unable to add your referral for the month, we will talk to you about next steps. We apologize for this inconvenience as we work to make our waiting list more sustainable and efficient!

Student Requirements

Students with IHELP:

  • are over the age of 18.

  • have limited or no access to community English courses.

  • must be able to commit to two, one-hour tutoring sessions per week.

*We understand that many students cope with factors that might affect learning and pace in classes. We are sensitive to the needs of each student! Our program is individually paced and focused based on each student’s needs, goals, and abilities.

IHELP Language Policy

Immigrant Home English Learning Program encourages the professional interpretation and translation of communications for the public and/or intended specifically for the immigrant community.  For interoffice communication, or for communication specifically related to our program, IHELP staff may offer interpretation or translation, if suited.  If the student speaks a language outside of staff capacity, a student’s family member may interpret or translate for program purposes only, as long as the family member is at least 14 years old.  In the event that the student speaks a language that is outside of staff capacity and there is no one available in the home who is 14 years of age or older, IHELP contracts with Lamp Interpreters for interpretation and translation services. 

IHELP does not offer professional interpretation services, and redirects external requests for interpretation and translation to professional agencies.  Our goal is to build best practices within our community for working with people who are not fluent in English.  Please refer to the Immigrant Service Providers Network’s (ISPN) recommendations for a list of best practices, as well as for referrals to organizations that offer professional translation and interpretation services.
