IHELP Volunteer Tutors

We are in search of individuals who are interested in building relationships with English Language Learners. For our in-person option, we are recruiting individuals who reside in the St. Louis region. For our virtual option, we are recruiting volunteers who reside anywhere in the U.S.

We need volunteers who will adopt an attitude of life-long learning and cultural humility as they work in the program. Volunteers must commit to remaining open-minded, humble, and ready to learn.

Volunteer Requirements

We do not require our volunteers to have previous teaching experience or knowledge of a second language. Our volunteers receive training from IHELP staff before starting their work with their student, and ongoing training once they’ve started.

Volunteers must be:

  • 18 years of age or older.

  • Able to meet regularly with their student two times per week.

  • Flexible, patient, and comfortable working with individuals with limited English.

  • Able to either travel to and from their student’s home (by car, public transportation, etc.) or meet via Zoom each week.

Volunteer Benefits

As a volunteer, you’ll have an opportunity to:

  • Learn about another culture firsthand.

  • Get to know your student and their family.

  • Witness progress and celebrate both big and small victories together.

  • Gain valuable teaching and tutoring experience.
