Youth In-Home

English Learning

In 2022, IHELP merged with the English Tutoring Project (ETP) to create IHELP's Youth Program, serving students in K-5th grade. Similar to IHELP's Adult Program, volunteer tutors work one-on-one with students in their homes or virtually to teach English. IHELP worked with ETP on the implementation and operations of the program. Our first pilot year of the program took place during the 2022-2023 school year. In 2023, the Youth Program served 22 students from 4 different schools. We are in the process of evaluating our pilot program and establishing the next steps needed for growth, curriculum, and assessment of student progress. We are excited to offer this holistic approach to English learning for immigrant and refugee families and look forward to serving more students in the years to come!

If you are interested in getting involved in the Youth Program as a volunteer, community member, or parent of a potential student, please reach out to our Youth Program Manager, Natalie McCollough, at natalie@ihelpstl.org.

A Little Bit About the English Tutoring Program (ETP)

Since 1998, ETP’s experienced, caring teachers have helped almost 2,000 children from immigrant and refugee families from more than 30 different countries of origin learn standard English. These services were conducted:

  • At the students’ schools

  • At no cost to their families

  • At no cost to the school

Grounded in Catholic tradition and social teachings, ETP provides on-site assistance to children from refugee and immigrant families in acquiring English language skills in an environment where all children experience respect for themselves and their culture. ETP is an initiative of the St. Louis Area Women Religious Collaborative Ministries and began with startup support from the Missouri members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) and several foundations.

ETP is a nonprofit group begun to help children from immigrant and refugee families learn English quickly, in a setting where they and their cultures are respected, held at a practical time and place.
